How To Install A Hanging Chair In Bedroom
2. April 2019
Vivid colours, brighter light, fresh air: springtime makes you want to try out something new and make a change. It's time to bring out the garden furniture. Hammock chairs are especially popular. Gently swaying back and forth while enjoying the fresh spring air – the piece of furniture was made for this. Hanging chairs are also ideal for indoor use and offer a place to just lean back and relax. But the right fixing plays a crucial role. We show you what to keep in mind.
Where should a hanging chair be installed?
Where is the perfect place for a hanging chair? That should be one of the first questions to ask yourself. A small piece of advice before we get started: a hanging chair doesn't weight much, but the load that the fixing must carry increases when a person uses the chair. Construction materials such as gypsum plasterboard or gypsum fibreboard are unsuitable for this fixing challenge, especially due to the mobile loads that are caused when swinging in a hanging chair. Are you sure about which construction material you're dealing with? Carry out a test drill. More information about various construction materials can be found here.
If you want to be able to flexibly use a hanging chair you might consider attaching it to a corresponding stand. The disadvantage is that this construction takes up quite a lot of space and doesn't come cheap. When outdoors you should ensure that the stand is securely positioned. The hanging chair could also be attached to a ceiling or tree as a space-saving alternative. It's easiest if you decide on a permanent location from where to hang it ahead of time. This will allow you to inspect the conditions and find the best fixing.
Finding the right height
Regardless of whether you're attaching the hammock chair indoors or outdoors, you should make sure that you determine the right height. If the standard height doesn't suit you, then an additional rope or chain can provide some leeway. Otherwise you might find that it is either too difficult to get into the hanging chair or that your legs dangle on the floor. In general, enough room should be left between the chair and the floor. Freshly washed hanging chairs, for example, tend to stretch out a bit. A good point of reference to finding the right height is to hang the chair at hip height.
Fixed indoor installation
Concrete
As mentioned previously, you should first check which construction material you want to attach the hanging chair from. Installations in concrete, for instance, aren't a problem. The piece of furniture can essentially be anchored at any point in this construction material. Most hanging chairs come with anchors. You can find out about the disadvantages of lower-quality fixings here. Drilling might be the first challenge you encounter when installing something in a concrete wall. Make sure that you are using professional tools. A cordless screwdriver won't get you far. A hammer drill is an ideal tool for this application, but not necessarily a cheap one. It might be worth purchasing one if you have multiple DIY projects. Otherwise, consider opting for an impact driver. For guaranteed anchoring safety make sure you don't forget to clean out the drill hole.
Wood
Have you got a subsurface made of wood? Not a problem, especially if you're hanging the chair from supporting and stable beams. Installing the object in planking is not recommended, however. If nowhere else is available you should first check whether a stable beam is located underneath it. Finding an answer may prove to be a challenge. It's possible that you might find old photographs of the building that will provide this information.
Brick
Brick is a versatile construction material. The anchoring can therefore be crucial. You should ask for individual advice. In general, two-component injection mortars are recommended for use in brick. They can carry significantly higher loads compared to plastic plugs. You will need a dispenser in order to dispense the injection mortar. Begin by dispensing a small amount onto paper, cardboard, or any other surface that you no longer need. This allows the two injection mortar components to mix together so you can start applying it right away. Any mortar left over in the cartridge can easily be used with a new static mixer and reused for other fixing solutions at a later point.
Drywall
Our experts urge you not to hang a hammock seat from wallboard, especially from drywall. This subsurface is unable to carry the load of a hanging seat. The risk of the subsurface failing and the fixing coming loose is too high. Your personal safety should be a priority.
Outdoor installation
Who doesn't dream of enjoying the sun while relaxing in a hanging chair? A stand is unlikely to work, as it won't find a secure hold on what is mostly uneven ground. Instead, you could hang the hammock chair from a strong branch or from a balcony with a rope. You should of course ensure that wherever you attach the chair is really stable enough to withstand swinging movements.
For sufficient safety: Rely on quality
As we already mentioned, we recommend opting for a good-quality fixing. After all, your own personal safety is of the highest priority. You should be able to switch off and enjoy the sun while sitting in a hanging chair rather than worry about the safety of the fixing.
Have you got any other applications and are unsure of which plug to pick? Then download our free plug finder app for iOS and Android. Here you will find the most common applications; you can enter the construction material, the weight of the attachment part and other specifications and you will be given a suitable plug and screw recommendation with assembly instructions and a purchasing option.
